Three Little Words
“Come on, Jon!”

Dana called to me from the other side of the busy main road. She was laughing. “Come on, Jon!” she yelled again, waving her arms and baring her teeth in a wide grin.

The cars rushed in front of me, speeding past and ruffling my clothes. It was making me dizzy. She had survived though – I’d be fine. I just had to run, just leg it across, and then I’d be safe and she’d be thinking of me as someone worth spending time with.

“Come on, Jon!”

I located her face through the rushing colours; saw her big blue eyes wide, her blonde hair swirling around her creamy skin. My heart did that funny little flip-flop thing it did whenever I looked at her, and I tensed my body, ready for flight. I glanced up and down the road, waiting for a gap, even if it was tiny. Just one little gap, and I could go…

Come on, Jon!

I pushed off the pavement with my legs as soon as she spoke, darting in front of a car, feeling the rush of adrenaline coursing through my veins – then a thud, a scream, and darkness.
